Often times a donor will attempt to alter their urine sample in some way in order to prevent a positive drug test result. The may try a variety of different adulteration methods including:
- Diluting their urine specimen with water or drinking excessive amounts of water before the test in an effort to reduce the concentration of drug metabolites in their urine.
- Substituting their sample with synthetic urine, urine samples from a person who is "clean", or even going as far as using juice or animal urine.
- Adding a structure altering agent to to mask the presence of drug metabolites. These may include bleach, eye drops, hydrogen peroxide, etc.
